Bricklaying machine for sand-lime brick walls

When large buildings such as hospitals are built, the bricklayers have to make quite a few meters during their work. This takes strength and puts a strain on the body. In order to relieve the strain on its employees when laying sand-lime brick walls, the construction company Züblin commissioned Dreiling Maschinenbau GmbH to design and manufacture a unique bricklaying machine that can be used on large construction sites. A challenge that we successfully mastered.

Our client:

The construction company Züblin (Strabag AG) is Germany’s number one in building construction and civil engineering; location: Stuttgart, Germany

The mission:

To create a semi-automated solution in the form of a construction machine not yet designed in this way, with which the sand-lime brick walls of large properties can be laid efficiently. The bricklaying machine was to combine a self-propelled chassis, a lifting platform and a crane and be able to lift and place sand-lime bricks weighing 270 kilograms – at a height of up to five meters.

The challenge:

The challenge with this order was not in the mechanical engineering, but in the standard-compliant implementation, documentation and approval of the bricklaying machine. To ensure stability and tipping safety even at a height of five meters in wind and weather, the correct centre of gravity of the machine had to be determined and the design adapted accordingly. With the lifting and working platform, the crane and the chassis, three worlds had to be harmoniously combined in one machine. At the same time, the machine’s transportability from site to site had to be guaranteed.

Our solution:

Wir haben innerhalb von 15 Monaten eine Maurermaschine für Kalksandsteinwände konstruiert, gefertigt, montiert und in Betrieb genommen. The bricklaying machine for sand-lime brick walls combines the crawler chassis of a mini excavator with a self-propelled lifting platform and a crane. A worker hangs the bricks below, which are lifted, swiveled and set down at working height. A second worker stands on the lifting platform and lays the bricks.

Walls can be laid three times faster thanks to the machine; instead of four to five workers, only two are needed. The use of the machine reduces the physical strain on the workers and improves their health and safety. In addition, scaffolding up to five meters high can be saved.

When folded up, the machine measures just 2.40 meters x 2.20 meters x 2.40 meters, so it can be easily transported from site to site by truck and tandem trailer. It is ready for use within 30 minutes.

The customer has ordered three of these machines from us so far.
